What I learned from tonights run…

It is TMI Tuesday still right? *checks clock* yup. good, got a real doozy for ya…

Pro Tip: Unless you are Paula radcliffe always go before you leave the house for a run.

When you are fearful of taking another long stride lest you unleash hell puts a real dampener on your run, trust me.

Managed to get halfway through the session before bowing out but no amount of MTFU can hold back the call of nature so off home I went at fast as I could without openly inviting trouble.

Gutted I only got 5k in but I’m off work Thursday & Friday so I’ll be out for either a long ride or run if I can.

Riding to work in the snow

makes me feel like a bloody superhero when I arrive in the office much to everyones amazement.

Mucho slush and compacted snow about today so it was a careful ride in with some friends but only had two minor “oh shi-” moments where the back wheel wanted to show off by going side to side instead of forwards.

Am hoping todays traffic clears the roads for tonights return journey otherwise it’s going to be majorly icy which I’m sure will mean it’s new underpants time before I get home. lol

Am tempted to MTFD and take the bike on the riverboat back along the thames instead but where’s the fun in that?

Also srsly… where’s my damn studded ice tyres Germany! What gives? I thought you guys were ultra-efficient and shiz.

    Snow has arrived in London

My snow/ice tires however have not. FML.

Still I MTFU and rode in today, sh*t I figured it can’t be much colder outside than it is inside my flat right now with no heating and the snow is fresh so not much chance of ice.

Glad I did it too, I arrived in the office like some kind of snow covered superhero out braving the elements, while everyone else struggled with the tube/trains/buses.

And I was one of a handful of people who actually got in ON TIME!

I AM going running with the tritons tonight as well. I fully expect to fall over whilst running. I only walked 20 yards this morning from the office to the coffee shop and I nearly slipped twice on like 1cm of snow slush (take note kids: air force ones are NOT good snow shoes… hopefully my Triax+ running shoes will fare better).

Scales are showing I’m back under tomorrows goal weight again this morning, unless the gods of water retention are in a spiteful mood all is looking good for a decent WiW tomorrow.

Be careful out there people, But remember to be awesome while doing so.

    Recovery week is over!

and I’m feeling fully rested and ready to get back on it… time to bring the pain!

In other news I briefly dipped one-quarter pound under my target weight for dec 1st on Saturday (195.75lbs) and promptly bounced back up one and three quarter pounds (197.5lbs) yesterday/today.

Gonna be extra careful with my diet today/tomorrow and hopefully I’ll drop back down by WiW.

    Guess what happened…

    Yup another race, another PB.

as I said in my last post this was the monthly 5k Time Trial with the Greenwich Tritons.

    and my finish time?

22:28 - TWENTY TWO MINUTES EFFING TWENTY EIGHT SECONDS!

this is 1:16 faster than when I ran the exact same route 3 weeks ago.

it also puts my average pace at 4:29/km and guess what? I didn’t puke! I was sucking down air in gulps and sounded like a wounded seal though.

    So

At first I was all like…

    Then I was like…

First time I’ve cycled to work and back AND run with the tritons where we did HILL SPRINTS (again) and GODDAMN was it tough, by the end of the warmup it felt like I had no energy left in my legs at all but I persevered and stuck it out and all in all it was a pretty good introductory brick session and I figure if I’m going to do a sprint triathlon next year I’ll need to cycle and run anyways so why no start now.

I think I may be due a rest day tomorrow after todays exertions but i’ll get my bike gear ready just in case I change my mind.

time for dinner and a well earned rest.

    More Milestones and MTFU

So following on from my previous post I managed to just sneak under the 200lb mark with todays weigh in, I’m now officially out of the 2xx’s and into the 1xx’s. About bloody time!

Last night was Triton training and we did hill sprints. If anything calls for a good dose of MTFU it’s going out in the freezing cold and running up and down a steep hill for an hour.

While a small part of me was being a whiny bitch and trying to tell myself I couldn’t do it there was a big booming voice drowning that out telling me ‘You’re running a 10k THIS saturday with some major hill sections, after this you’re gonna kill it’. and you know what I am gonna kill it. my pre-race run of the course helped belay my fears a little that the hills weren’t impossible, last nights run totally destroyed any doubts I wasn’t gonna be sprinting up the final hill to the finish line.

In other MTFU news and following on from the hill sprints last night my legs were DEAD when I got home but did I flake out on cycling in to work today? no. what did I do? I MTFU and made my aching legs cycle my arse into work. I was slow but I did it.

And I’m glad I did as I just found out it’s a friends birthday tomorrow night so I’m not gonna be able to bring my bike to work so I avoided missing two straight days on the bike. Of course under the rules of MTFU that’s much too lame a reason to excuse myself from a workout so I’ll be up at 6am running in the park to atone for my missed commute.

19x’s? meh, I got my eyes on the 18x’s now. bring it.

    Gadetry and Geekery ahoy!

So today I totally buckled to my own peer pressure and ordered the Garmin Forerunner 305 today. hey it was already £10 cheaper than last week for some reason and to top it off amazon are running a 10% off voucher for it until the 31st oct so it’s only £98 delivered which is 50% off rrp!

Can’t wait to start doing some hr based training now. I think it may even arrive in time for fridays 5k time trial which is the perfect pilot run opportunity I think.

And now a question for my fellow fitblr technogeeks as I’ve sated that particular craving for technology I have an opening on my christmas list for something else and right about now I’m thinking that the Withings wifi scale fits the bill quite nicely. especially as I can link it to the same software I’ll be using with my Garmin (TrainingPeaks) so I can bring all of my daily data into one big statistical blob for endless analysis.

But before I set my heart on it can any current owners of the aforesaid scale offer up insight/opinion on it’s practicality/worthiness of being my big-ticket xmas present?

    Halfway point, a brief catchup

So todays weigh-in signifys the mid point in my goal of becoming ‘fit by 30’. I started on March 8 2010 and my big 3-0 is on June 5th 2010.

I originally started out with an aim of getting a BMI under 25. I soon realised that the BMI is inherently flawed and as such probably not the best yardstick with which to measure my success so I decided that it would be much better to just lose a sh*tload of weight and get myself exercising. I’ve set the bar of my weight loss at 100lbs but I fully expect to never reach it as I will be replacing some of my fat with muscle.

With that said though to date I’ve already lost 70lbs (holla!) so the final 30lbs is possible but I’m not sure if that’s the kind of body shape I want. I think I’ll let my body decide that one and it’ll let me know what it’s comfortable with.

In terms of achievements along the way I of course have continued to lose weight at a fairly sane/steady pace and today see’s me surpass a loss of one quarter of my original body weight. I’m 3/4 the man I used to be, haha.

I took up running and graduated the Couch to 5k in 8 weeks with my first 5k race on June 13th I finished in 32:19. My second official 5k race was on August 9th and I finished in 24:19 which saw me drop 8 minutes off my original time in 2 months and still remains a personal best for the distance.

I’ve ran 10k a couple of times (usually when I had no intention of doing so when I started the run) and my first 10k race is this sunday, I hope to finish in under an hour and should be able to do so comfortably.

I’ve bought a bicycle and while I haven’t yet began due to a busy running week and wanting to get a little more assured in the saddle again before I hit the mean streets at rush hour I intend to commute 14 miles a day to work and back.

I also joined a group called the Greenwich Tritons, these guys run triathlons and ironmans and crazy sh*t like that. I ran with them last night for my first training session and it kicked my arse but goddamn was it good fun. I’ll be easing myself into the swimming and cycling sessions in due course as well with a goal to completing a sprint triathlon in either mid/late 2011 or early 2012.

And just finally I’ll mention my clothes… I was an XXL t-shirt and 40/42” waist in March. I now fit 36” waist and the t-shirt I’m wearing right now is a M (although it varies brand to brand. I’m more of a baggy L if anything). Not only has this decimated my wardrobe (although being stubborn and a fan of hip hop my XXL tee’s still factor in my rotations regularly, but boy are they baggy).

As I write all this and think back to the position I was in just 7 months ago I never though I’d be in shape, I was consigned to a life of being big and out of shape. In a way the stroke which my dad suffered was actually a good thing (and this is something he has actually told me himself) because it seems that was the only catalyst capable of enacting such a wholesale change in my life (he’s doing fine now and asides from a loss of raw strength back to his old self). I started out to make my dad proud and to stop him having to worry about his only son suffering the same problem he had later in life (and boy was I bigger than my dad anyways) but now I do it because I enjoy it and this is how my life is now. I enjoy the little things like buying clothes I like rather than clothes that fit, like running for the bus/train/whatever, like not feeling like I’m unfairly taking too much space on the packed train in the mornings.

I wrote this to give a brief update of my own progress but at the same time I hope that I can help someone else who believes that such a drastic lifestyle change is unattainable to them. You can do it if you WANT to do it. that’s the biggest barrier you’ll face and unfortunately it’s the one you have to break through by yourself. once the motivation and determination is there the rest is easy.

If anyone wants to ask me anything there’s an ask link on my homepage in the sidebar.

This is what ‘living’ healthy is about…

    Healthy eating fail win compromise…

As tomorrow is my last day at my current job and I’m due to begin working in another part of London it means I’ll no longer be based in Soho and surrounded by the amazing array of lunchtime eateries I’m used to so by way of farewell I decided that today and tomorrow I’ll visit my two most regular haunts and partake in my favourite lunchtime repast from both.

Today was the golden cafe and before my weight loss began I was buying gigantic panini’s full of meat, cheese and mayo from these guys on a daily basis. I decided to go for the ‘New york deli’ which is a large panini packed with pastrami, swiss cheese and pickle all slammed into a contact grill until it was oozing melted cheese and grease! yum!

So I get back to the office and unwrap it… damn this thing is huge, did I really used to wolf down the whole thing and then grab a bag of crisps and a chocolate bar? I sure did, but not this time, I took a bite and remembered both how awesome it tastes but also how greasy these things are. So being the even minded fitblr that I am I knew even though this thing was a ‘treat’ a lot less damage would be done if I just ate half and given the change in my size I’d probably feel just as full.

So as soon as the last bite of the first half was swallowed I rolled the rest of that badboy up in it’s wrapping and took it over to the desk of my mate who has an insanely high metabolism and basically eats any leftover food that may enter the office. It took him almost 0.0000001th of a second to grab it from my hand and start chowing down.

I’m now happy as I probably had only slightly more calories than I would normally have at lunchtime (i’m putting it at 600 kcal as a finger in the air rough overestimate), I got to have my ‘treat’ and the damage done from going over my daily budget by a couple of hundred calories (depending on my dinner tonight) Is easily rectifiable with my run tomorrow morning.

So no I didn’t eat healthily but it’s impossible to expect yourself to do so every single day anyways but if you have the presence of mind to be sensible when you’re not being healthy then it doesn’t have to always be a big deal.
